Precis turns what you say into text on your Mac. Your voice and what you dictate never leave it. This page lists everything that does, in the app and on this website.

In the app

What stays on your Mac

All of this lives in your user Library, in ~/Library/Application Support/Precis and Precis's preferences file. Deleting the app and that folder removes it. Precis has no account, no analytics, no advertising and no crash reporting.

What Precis reads while you dictate

To type where your cursor is and to pick the right Style, Precis uses the macOS Accessibility permission to see which app you're in, the title of the browser tab you're in, and the character just before your cursor (to know whether a space is needed).

With Spell names from the screen on (Settings › Dictation), Precis also reads the names in front of you while you dictate, such as an email's recipients or a chat's title, so “Hi Jane” isn't typed as “Hygiene”.

All of this is used on the spot for that one dictation and never kept, except the app's name, which is saved with the dictation while History is on.

You can take back the Microphone and Accessibility permissions at any time in System Settings › Privacy & Security.

When Precis goes online

Only for these four things:

Buying Precis

Purchases are handled by Dodo Payments, the reseller and Merchant of Record for Precis. They collect your payment details, name, email address and country to process the order, charge any tax, and send your receipt and licence key, under their privacy policy. I receive your name, email address, country and what you bought, so I can support your licence and answer your emails. I don't sell or share it.

Your choices

Precis isn't meant for children under 13.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes too, and a significant change is mentioned in the release notes of the update that brings it.
